Vietnam s exports and imports of cashew nuts in first 6 months of 2019

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in the first six months of this year, Vietnam’s exports and imports of cashew nuts both increased in volume and decreased in value over the same period of 2018.

In the first 6 months of 2019, Vietnam’s of cashew nuts to almost all markets grew, but the turnover declined.

According to the General Department of Customs, in June of 2019, Vietnam’s exports of cashew nuts reached 39,200 tons, worth of 275.61 million USD, down by 4.6 per cent in volume and 8.6 per cent in value compared to May of 2019. The figure was up by 21.4 per cent in volume but down by 6 per cent in value compared to June of 2018. In the first 6 months of 2019, Vietnam’s cashew nut exports reached 195,700 tons, valued at 1.489 billion USD, up by 12.2 per cent in volume, but decreased by 12.1 per cent in value compared to the first 6 months of 2018. The average export price reached 7,613 USD per ton, down by 21.5 per cent compared to the first 6 months of 2018.

Although Vietnam is ranked third in raw cashew production, but we have been leading the world in exporting cashew nuts for 10 consecutive years.


Leading cashew export markets in the first six months of 2019

Vietnamese cashew nuts are exported to 27 countries and territories in the world, of which the U.S, China, the Netherlands and the UK are the leading markets. The country’s exports of cashew nuts to the above mentioned markets accounted for 64.6 per cent of the market share and 64.3 per cent of the total volume with 63,700 tons worth of 480.68 million USD, down by 4.06 per cent in volume and 25.69 per cent in value compared to the first 6 months of 2018. The average export price was 7,543.8 USD per ton, down by 22.54 per cent. In May of 2019, Vietnam’s exports of cashew nuts to the U.S decreased by 2.76 per cent in volume and 7.69 per cent in value, the average export price also decreased by 5.07 per cent compared to May of 2018, equivalent to 13,200 tons, worth of 89.7 million USD, and the average price was 6,783 USD per ton.
Ranked second after the U.S market was China mainland with the volume of 28,200 tons, worth of 221.4 million USD, up by 52.65 per cent in volume and 24.4 per cent in value over the same period last year, walthough the average export price decreased by 18.51 per cent to only 7,843.82 USD per ton.

The next are the Netherlands, German and British markets with 18,050 tons; 8,000 tons and 7,840 tons worth of 142.2 million USD; 63.64 million USD and 55.75 million USD, respectively.
In general, in the first half of 2019, the country’s exports of cashew nuts to almost all market increased but the turnover was mostly reduced. Accordingly, exports to Pakistan and Greece markets both increased significantly by more than 2 times, increasing by 107.14 per cent and 105.04 per cent respectively, despite the average export price decreased by 10.05 per cent and 25.81 per cent respectively, but the turnover increased by 86.32 per cent and 52.11 per cent over the same period last year. Besides, the exports to Belgium also increased strongly by 88.44 per cent in volume and 59.08 per cent in value to 2,420 tons, worth of 20.8 million USD, the average export price decreased by 15.5 per cent to 8,565.68 USD per ton.

On the other hand, the amount of cashew nuts exported to India, South Africa and Norway markets all decreased by 36.17 per cent; 33.85 per cent and 30.05 per cent, respectively.

Notably, in the first half of this year Vietnam also exported cashew nuts to Saudi Arabia with 1,380 tons; Egypt 1,180 tons and Kuwait 100 tons.

 

Vietnam’s imports of cashew nuts in the first six months of 2019

In June 2019, Vietnam’s imports of cashew nuts increased in both quantity and value over the previous month. The figure brought the amount of imported cashew nuts in the first 6 months of 2019 to 707,000 tons, worth over 1 billion USD, up by 34.8 per cent in volume but down by 9.3 per cent in value compared to the same period last year.

According to preliminary statistics figures from Vietnam General Department of Customs, in June of 2019, the whole country imported 239,000 tons of cashew nuts, worth of 295.8 million USD, up by 26.6 per cent in volume and 16.4 per cent in value compared to May of 2019, bringing the total exports of cashew nuts in the first 6 months of 2019 to 707,800 tons, worth of over USD 1 billion USD, up by 34.8 per cent in volume but down by 9.3 per cent in value compared to same period of 2018.


Leading cashew nut import markets in the first six months of 2019

Vietnam imported cashew nuts mainly from markets such as Ivory Coast, Cambodia and Indonesia. The country’s imports of cashew nuts from Ivory Coast reached 214,600 tons, worth of 305.9 million USD, up by 67.1 per cent in volume and by 12.56 per cent in value over the first 6 months of 2018. In June of 2019 alone, Vietnam also imported from this market 111,000 tons of cashew nuts, worth of 141.2 million USD, up by 70.23 per cent in volume and 59.71 per cent in value compared to May of 2019.

Cambodia market ranked second with 170,500 tons, worth of 287 million USD, up by 68.82 per cent in volume and 41.04 per cent in value over the same period last year.

Notably, compared to the first 6 months of 2018, Vietnam also imported cashew nuts from several other markets such as Ghana, Nigeria, Republic of Tanzania and Singapore. Ghana was leading the list with 122,500 tons; Nigeria - 67,000 tons; Indonesia - 16,200 tons; Tanzania - 180 tons and Singapore - 105 tons.
